The Study Permit Documents Checklist Every Filipino Needs
Applying for a Canadian study permit is one of the most document-heavy processes a Filipino student will ever go through. And the frustrating truth is: one missing paper can delay your entire application by weeks — sometimes months. This checklist is designed to help you avoid that.
The foundation of your application is your acceptance letter. This must be from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Without it, your application cannot proceed. Make sure the letter is official, on school letterhead, and includes your program name, start date, and duration.
Next is your proof of financial support. IRCC requires you to show that you can cover your tuition, living expenses, and return travel. For most programs, this means showing at least CAD 10,000 per year on top of your first year's tuition. Bank statements, scholarship letters, or a sponsor's financial documents all count — but they must be recent (within the last three to six months).
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your program, plus at least six months beyond. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before applying — do not submit an application with a passport that will expire during your studies.
Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) or study plan is where you explain why you chose this program, this school, and this country — and why you intend to return to the Philippines after graduation. This is one of the most important documents in your application, and it deserves serious attention.
You'll also need passport-sized photos that meet IRCC specifications, proof of your educational background (transcripts, diplomas), and in some cases, language test results (IELTS or equivalent). If someone is sponsoring your studies, include a sponsor letter and their financial documents.
Finally, pay close attention to the specific requirements for your visa office. Requirements can vary slightly depending on where your application is processed. Always check the official IRCC website for the most current list before submitting.
Preparation is everything. The more organized and complete your application, the faster and smoother your processing will be. If you need help writing your SOP or any supporting letters, SOP Hub is here to make sure your documents are as strong as they can be.
